Hedge Cutting Season

Hedge Cutting Season is from 1st September -  End of February, Annually
Leitrim County Council wishes to remind all landowners and occupiers, under the terms of the Roads Act 1993, that it is their legal responsibility to carry out any necessary tree or hedge cutting where their land or property abuts the public road so as to ensure that any trees/hedges or other vegetation are not a hazard to people using the public road.  Hedge Cutting should only be carried out during the period from 1st September to the end of February, annually.  Hedgerows, trees or other vegetation along the public road that require cutting or trimming back should be cut immediately and all cuttings removed from the roads and verges.  Adequate signposting should be provided while hedge cutting works are in progress. 

Ash Dieback - Landowners should check trees on their property which abut the public road for Ash Dieback and any such trees should be cut immediately as they pose a hazard to all road users particularly during any winter storms and landowners will be liable for any damage caused by fallen roadside trees.

Landowners & occupiers must:

• Cut or trim roadside hedgerows and remove all cuttings from roads/verges
• Cut back overhanging vegetation from footpaths and junctions, remove dead or unsafe roadside trees
• Landowners are responsible for removing fallen trees from public roads
• Failure to comply may result in a Hedge Cutting Notice and possible prosecution under the Roads Act 1993
