IDENTIFICATION OF NEW BATHING WATERS 2026
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF NEW BATHING WATERS 2026
In accordance with the Bathing Water Directive and Bathing Water Quality Regulations (S.I. No 79 of 2008), Leitrim County Council is now inviting public participation in the identification of new bathing waters in County Leitrim.
Currently, Keeldra Lake, Mohill, Co. Leitrim is the only designated bathing water site in County Leitrim.
The Bathing Water Quality Regulations stipulate that designated bathing water sites are to be closely monitored during the designated bathing water season from 1st June to 15th September to ensure stringent water quality standards are met.
This consultation process provides the public with an opportunity to:
(1) comment on existing designated bathing waters with a view to continuation of designation and
(2) comment on other bathing waters not currently designated but which may be considered for designation.
There are numerous rivers and lakes in County Leitrim where swimming/recreational activities take place but they are not currently designated as bathing water sites. If you wish to propose a new bathing water site or comment on an existing site, the following are some of the factors that must be taken into consideration:
- The number of people using the site.
- Infrastructure or facilities provided.
- Access for emergency services vehicles and craft.
- Safe access and egress for members of the public.
- Presence of currents/potentially dangerous rocks.
If you wish to make a submission, you can do so by completing the required application template and submitting to environment@leitrimcoco.ie or alternatively by post to Environment Department, Leitrim County Council, Park Lane House, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim, N41 RX53.
Only completed submissions, which fulfil all the requirements, will be considered for possible designation. Application template, along with all associated documentation, is available to download at the following links - Bathing Waters - Application Template and Public Advice for identifying Bathing Waters.
Closing date for all completed applications: 4pm on Friday, 18th September 2026
