Hedge Cutting Notice Hedge Cutting & Overhanging Tree Canopy Grant Scheme 2025/2026
Leitrim County Council wishes to remind all landowners and occupiers, under the terms of the Roads Act, 1993, that it is their legal responsibility to carry out any necessary tree or hedge cutting where their land or property abuts the public road so as to ensure that any trees/hedges or other vegetation are not a hazard to people using the public road.
Hedge Cutting should only be carried out during the period from 1st September to the end of February, annually.
Hedgerows, trees or other vegetation along the public road that requires cutting or trimming back should be cut immediately and all cuttings removed from the roads and verges. Adequate signposting should be provided while hedge cutting works are in progress.
HEDGE CUTTING GRANT
To encourage the cutting of roadside trees and hedges, Leitrim County Council operates a Hedge Cutting Grant Scheme. The Hedge Cutting Grant Scheme is now open and aims to encourage the cutting of roadside hedges/trees along the Public Road Network. Open to all, individual applicants, communities and groups.
HEDGES - The grant is €75 per km of roadside hedge cutting (min length is 1km)
TREES/TREE CANOPIES - A grant of €50 per km is available for the cutting of overhanging tree canopies/branches (min of 10 trees per km) but is only available as part of the Hedge Cutting Grant
