Leitrim County Council are delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new heritage initiative called the Leitrim Fieldnames Project.
The names of our fields are an important connection to our heritage and they can tell us a lot about our local area, characters who once used to live there, the landscape and interesting natural and built features in the locality. Almost every field once had a name but these names are now slowly being lost to us.
The Leitrim Fieldnames Project is looking for volunteers across Leitrim to record the unique field names found in the county that offer insight into times past and the heritage of the county.
Free training workshops are being offered at Ballinamore Library on Tuesday 23rd June at 6 pm and St George’s Heritage & Visitor Centre in Carrick on Shannon on Wednesday, 24th of June at 7 pm. These workshops are being delivered by heritage consultants, Abarta Heritage and free resources and training will be delivered to anyone interested in getting involved in this new initiative.
At the workshop, interesting folklore connected to Leitrim’s field names will be discussed and volunteers will be shown how to record field names in their local area. Other training sessions will be delivered later in the summer. All are welcome to come along and hear more about the project and entrance to the workshops is free.
This project is being delivered by Abarta Heritage on behalf of Leitrim Heritage and Leitrim County Council with support from The Heritage Council.
