Rainfall Rivalry
Leitrim vs Roscommon: Which County Will Get the Most Rain?
As part of Leitrim & Roscommon Science Week 2026, and in collaboration with Met Éireann, we're inviting schools, families, individuals and community groups across both counties to become citizen scientists and help us discover which county receives the most rainfall.
For two weeks leading up to and including Science Week, participants will measure rainfall in their local area and submit their daily readings. Together, we'll build a picture of rainfall across Leitrim and Roscommon and see how weather patterns can vary from place to place.

How to Take Part
1. Make Your Own Rain Gauge
Create a simple rain gauge using an empty 2-litre plastic bottle. We've included easy step-by-step instructions below, so no special equipment is required.
2. Measure Your Rainfall
Measure and record the rainfall in your area each day. You can start collecting data straight away, there is no need to wait until Science Week begins.
3. Submit Your Readings
Submit your daily rainfall measurements using our online form. You can submit readings over several days, and the more data we collect, the better our results will be.

Every Reading Counts
Even if you record 0mm of rainfall, that's still an important scientific measurement. Dry days tell us just as much about our weather as wet days, so please submit your readings regardless of the result.
Every observation helps build a more accurate picture of rainfall across Leitrim and Roscommon.
Why Take Part?
Rainfall Rivalry is a fun way to get involved in a real scientific investigation while learning more about weather, climate and data collection.
By taking part, you'll help us:
- Discover which county receives the most rainfall
- Compare rainfall patterns across different locations
- Explore how weather varies over short distances
- Collect valuable citizen science data
- Learn more about meteorology and climate
So, Which County Will Come Out on Top?
Will it be Leitrim or Roscommon?
