Leitrim Heritage Plan for 2026-2031

 

Leitrim County Council approved the County Leitrim Heritage Plan for 2026-2031 at the Council Meeting on September 7th 2026.

This Plan is the third for County Leitrim and was developed by the Leitrim Heritage Forum before being adopted by Leitrim County Council.

The four key objectives of the Plan focus on;

  • Engage Individuals and Groups to Participate in Heritage Initiatives .
  • Promote Awareness and Appreciation of Leitrim’s Heritage.
  • Support the Gathering and Dissemination of Heritage Data.
  • Support the Conservation and Management of Leitrim’s Heritage.

Cllr. Mary Bohan, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, welcomed the plan stating “This Heritage Plan strongly aligns with Leitrim County Council’s commitment to protecting, conserving, and promoting our heritage in all its forms, ensuring it continues to play a valuable role in our economic, social and cultural lives.”

This new Heritage Plan for County Leitrim outlines an ambitious strategy for how Leitrim County Council will collaborate with others, including The Heritage Council, to protect and manage our heritage for the benefit of all in the coming five years, from 2026 to 2031. This Plan builds upon the significant achievements of previous Heritage Plans and sets new goals for the preservation of heritage.

Cllr. Justin Warnock, chairman of the Leitrim Heritage Forum, praised the dedication of Forum members for their hard work and continued commitment to implementing the Plan’s actions. He highlighted several key successes from the previous Plan, including The Leitrim Sweathouse Project, The Mummers Join, The Leitrim Chair Project, The Leitrim Basket Project; The Leitrim Wetland Survey; The O’Rourke’s of Leitrim Project; The Leitrim Holy Wells Project; The Connecting Through Heritage podcast and short film series; and The Leitrim Fieldnames Project. He also highlighted the high levels of public participation in these projects and the ambition of the new heritage plan to continue to support community engagement.
