County Leitrim has reached a significant digital infrastructure milestone with the completion of the main National Broadband Plan (NBP) rollout, bringing high-speed fibre broadband to almost 12,000 homes, farms, businesses and schools across the county.

On Monday 14th September National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Leitrim County Council announced the completion of the main infrastructure build works in County Leitrim. Leitrim is the ninth county in Ireland to complete the principal NBI rollout, with the national deployment now entering its final phase.

The €46 million Government investment has delivered a fibre broadband network capable of providing minimum speeds of 500Mbps to premises within the State's intervention area. More than 3,600 premises in the county have already connected to the network.

The milestone was marked at an event in The Hive, Leitrim's Technology Enterprise Centre in Carrick-on-Shannon, where representatives from Government, National Broadband Ireland and Leitrim County Council highlighted the transformative impact high-speed connectivity is having on local communities, education, enterprise and remote working opportunities.

Patrick Neary, Assistant Secretary, Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, described the project as an important achievement for the county.

"Government has invested €46 million to deliver this infrastructure in Leitrim, and that investment will have a lasting impact on communities right across the county. For a county with such a strong and dispersed rural population, reliable high-speed broadband is particularly important in supporting people to live, work and build their futures in their own communities." He added that the National Broadband Plan is ensuring that where people live does not determine the opportunities available to them and that the completion of the rollout in Leitrim demonstrates a continued commitment to supporting rural communities.

Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Mary Bohan, welcomed the completion of the rollout, describing broadband as essential infrastructure for modern rural life.

"The benefits of this investment will be felt across Leitrim for generations to come. It will support business growth, strengthen rural development, enable innovation and help ensure Leitrim remains an attractive place to live, work, invest and raise a family."

Joseph Gilhooly, Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council, acknowledged the collaboration that made the project possible.

"The completion of the main National Broadband Plan rollout across County Leitrim is a significant achievement that reflects the strong partnership between Government, National Broadband Ireland, Leitrim County Council and local communities."

He noted that the project demonstrates what can be achieved through strong cooperation and a shared commitment to enhancing services and opportunities for citizens across the county.
