Leitrim Secures Over €13.5m Under New Towns and Cities Regeneration
Leitrim County Council has welcomed the announcement by James Browne TD, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, that four projects in Carrick on Shannon, County Leitrim have been approved for inclusion under the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund, namely:
- Urban Framework Plan - Upper Main Street Cat 1A €150,000
- Waterside Regeneration Project Cat 1A €105,000
- Bridge Street Public Realm Scheme and Town Hall Regeneration Cat 1B €7.2m
- Carrick-on Shannon Parks (Transformation of Urban Green Areas) Cat 1B €6.3m
The national programme will see up to €409 million invested in transformative regeneration projects across towns and cities throughout Ireland and will support the regeneration and renewal of town centres through investment in public realm improvements, community infrastructure, the redevelopment of vacant and underutilised sites, and projects that enhance the attractiveness and vitality of urban centres.
Welcoming the announcement, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Mary Bohan, said:
“This is a very significant funding announcement for County Leitrim and demonstrates the ambition of our communities and the commitment of Leitrim County Council to delivering projects that will strengthen our towns and villages. Notwithstanding we need to co-finance these projects, the investment will help create a vibrant, attractive and sustainable urban centre in Carrick on Shannon that will promote the County as a whole and will benefit residents, businesses and visitors alike for generations to come.”
Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council, Joseph Gilhooly, added:
“The approval of these projects represents a major endorsement of Leitrim County Council’s vision for place-making, regeneration and community development. The projects will support economic growth, enhance quality of life and contribute to the continued revitalisation of Carrick on Shannon as the County town which will in turn benefit the entire County of Leitrim. We look forward to working with the Department and our local communities to bring these important projects to fruition.”
Approved Projects in County Leitrim
The projects form part of a wider national programme that includes almost 120 projects across all local authorities and is designed to support both short-term and longer-term regeneration initiatives. The Fund places a strong emphasis on enhancing town centres, addressing vacancy and dereliction, improving public spaces and supporting community-focused development.
Collectively, these projects represent the most significant investment in Carrick-on-Shannon’s physical, social and economic fabric in a number of years. Together, they will transform key public spaces throughout the town, strengthening connections between the town centre, the River Shannon, parks and civic assets, while creating safer, more attractive and more accessible streets and public spaces for residents and visitors. The projects directly implement the vision and priorities identified through the Carrick-on-Shannon Town Centre First Plan and extensive community consultation, delivering a more vibrant, inclusive and environmentally sustainable town centre that encourages people to live, work, visit and spend time in the heart of the town.
Beyond the physical improvements, these projects will act as catalysts for wider regeneration and investment. By enhancing the quality of the public realm, revitalising underutilised sites, improving green infrastructure and unlocking opportunities for future housing, tourism and enterprise development, they will strengthen confidence in the town centre and support long-term economic growth. Collectively, the projects reinforce Carrick-on-Shannon’s role as a leading regional town and gateway to the Shannon and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, ensuring it remains a competitive, resilient and attractive destination for future generations.
