Active & Healthy Leitrim 2026–2031 Launched
New Five-Year Plan Sets Vision for an Active, Connected and Healthy Leitrim
Leitrim County Council, in partnership with Leitrim Sports Partnership and Sport Ireland, has officially launched Active & Healthy Leitrim: A Local Sport & Physical Activity Plan for Leitrim 2026–2031 at Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens.

The new five-year plan sets out an ambitious vision for County Leitrim:
"An Active, Connected and Healthy Leitrim where everyone can participate, progress and thrive through sport and physical activity."
The Plan aims to create more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active, remove barriers to participation, improve access to facilities and programmes, and support healthier, more connected communities throughout the county.
Speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Mary Bohan, highlighted the importance of ensuring opportunities are available to everyone:
"Whether someone is eight or eighty years of age, whether they have been involved in sport all their lives or are taking their first steps towards becoming active, we want Leitrim to be a county where that opportunity exists."

Director of Services, Leitrim County Council, Vincent Dwyer, said:
"Active & Healthy Leitrim is about much more than sport. It is about creating healthier communities, supporting inclusion and wellbeing, and ensuring that people of all ages and abilities have opportunities to be active. The success of this Plan will depend on strong partnerships, and Leitrim County Council is committed to working with Leitrim Sports Partnership, Sport Ireland and our many community partners to deliver on its ambitions."
Developed following extensive public consultation involving more than 520 residents, young people and stakeholder organisations, the Plan reflects the needs and aspirations of communities across the county.

Chairperson of Leitrim Sports Partnership, Michael O'Rourke, said:
"We have a very clear ambition for the next five years: more people active, more opportunities available, fewer barriers to participation, stronger communities and a healthier Leitrim."
The Plan is built around three strategic themes:
- Active People & Communities
- Active Spaces & Places
- Active Communication & Partnerships
These themes will guide the delivery of 50 actions aimed at increasing participation, supporting clubs and volunteers, improving access to facilities and strengthening collaboration across the county.
Active & Healthy Leitrim 2026–2031 marks an important step towards achieving the shared vision of a more active, connected and healthy Leitrim for everyone.
