County Leitrim Biodiversity Action Plan 2026 - 2031

Leitrim County Council’s Biodiversity Action Plan 2026–2031 sets out a shared vision for protecting, restoring, and celebrating the unique natural heritage of County Leitrim. Developed through extensive public consultation and collaboration with community groups, environmental organisations, and national agencies, the plan provides a clear framework for action over the next five years.
The Biodiversity Action Plan outlines practical steps to enhance habitats, support native species, strengthen ecological networks, address invasive species, and integrate biodiversity into local decision‑making. It also highlights the vital role that communities, landowners, and partner organisations play in safeguarding nature for current and future generations.
Vision
To create a thriving, resilient natural environment where biodiversity flourishes and there is a harmonious balance between nature & human activities.
The Plan includes actions under six objectives:
- Raise awareness of biodiversity through education and community engagement
- Protect and restoring natural habitats and native species
- Tackle and raise awareness of invasive alien species
- Promote and celebrate sustainable land use practices
- Track progress through monitoring and evaluation
- Provide funding, resources and support for biodiversity actions
