Sustainable Energy Communities

Sustainable Energy Community

A "Sustainable Energy Community" (SEC) is a group of people working together locally to use energy responsibly and sustainably for the benefit of that community.

A SEC shall aim as far as practicable to be energy efficient, to use renewable energy where feasible and to develop decentralised energy supplies. A SEC can include all the different energy users in the community including homes, sports clubs, community centres, churches and businesses and may register with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

An Energy Master Plan allows for a SEC to understand its energy demand and supply and provide recommendations on how the community will achieve its sustainability goals.  An Energy Master Plan will detail a community's specific characteristics, energy requirements and plans for the future. The Energy Master Plan is designed to work to a number of goals to become more efficient through upgrades and best practice, use of renewable fuels and through utilising smart technology.

A list of SECs in Co. Leitrim is available on the SEAI database.

Leitrim County Council are offering assistance to communities to undertake an Energy Master Plan in association with the SEAI grant programme.
