Do You Know Someone who deserves a ‘Leitrim Sports Star Award’?
Leitrim Sports Partnership will be holding its annual ‘Leitrim Sports Star Awards’ on Saturday 3rd December 2011. This is the second time such an awards ceremony has been held by Leitrim Sports Partnership. The awards are to acknowledge Individuals, Sports Clubs, Teams, Schools and Community Volunteers for their outstanding contributions and achievements to sport and recreation in Leitrim. A special night of celebration is planned by Leitrim Sports Partnership with a delectable 4 course meal, followed by the awards and brilliant live entertainment by well known band, Gobsmacked.
The ‘Leitrim Sports Star Awards’ night promises to be one of the top sporting highlights for the year. “Again, in 2011, there have been some excellent achievements both on an individual and team basis in Leitrim and we expect tough competition for the awards” said Declan Boyle, Co-ordinator, Leitrim Sports Partnership. Participation in sport and recreation is an integral part of community life in Leitrim. On the night Leitrim Sports Partnership will recognise and reward the outstanding achievements and contributions that both individuals and groups have made to sport and recreation in the County.
Nominations are now sought and should be submitted Leitrim Sports Partnership, Aras an Chontae, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim. The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday, 4th November 2011. If you would like to nominate any Individual/School/Club /Team for one of the Awards listed below please complete the nomination form in the paper or download a nomination form from www.leitrimsports.ie and submit to Leitrim Sports Partnership.
The categories are: 1. Sports Individual Junior, 2.Sports Individual Senior, 3.Juvenile Team of Year, 4.Men’s Team of the Year, 5.Women’s Team of the Year, 6.Best Sports School, 7. Community Person/Club Volunteer of the Year, 8.Special Achievement Award, 9.Exceptional Services to Sport & Recreation/ Hall of Fame, 10. Leitrim Sports Person of the Year.
“The awards aim to recognise not just people operating at the top level of their sport in the county but also to recognise people who provide the background support for their club and team“ stated Nollaig Whyte, Chairperson of Leitrim Sports Partnership, adding that “community recreation events such as cycles, walks, runs etc are leading the way in promoting an active way of life in Leitrim and this is reflected in the nominations being sought”. Community Person/Club Volunteer of the Year and Exceptional Services to Sport and Recreation are two such categories. Nominations are sought for people who organise community events that promote physical activity or people who give their time voluntarily to train teams, run clubs, have kits ready or who keep the pitches/facilities looking well for the big match days.
A new addition this year is to have a separate Men’s and Women’s Team of the year. Through the Women in Sport programmes, Leitrim Sports Partnership are seeing an increase in the numbers of females who are now active in a range of sports from rowing to tennis to football to soccer to horse riding etc. Leitrim Sports Partnership feels that this merits having a separate Women’s Team of the Year and Men’s Team of the Year.
The Special Achievement Award is open to anyone who has achieved their personal best in their field, perhaps by overcoming some challenges in order to be able to participate.
Nominations will be shortlisted by our guest panel of judges to three per category. The winner in each category will be announced on the night. Each winner will receive a specially handcrafted award and these awards will be presented by each of our generous sponsors.
